Beckley Coal Series In a continue series that highlights some of the obscure rail lines around Beckley, we find ourselves on Norfolk Southern's former Virginian Railway Winding Gulf Branch just south of Sophia. This branch line, rarely photographed is one of the last remaining VGN branch lines in use. Here, 100 empties head for Affinity Mine, as they enter the loops near Loop Junction, crossing over the former C&O roadbed. This line is extremely scenic, though a bit difficult to access.
This is dedicated (with permission) to the skilled and gifted photographer - Chase Gunnoe - who regularly posts and is on staff with RP. I believe he deserves a gallery showcasing his remarkable photos. This is for you Chase! (More great photos to come!)
