Remarks & Notes
Sun and cloud play tag with Rock Island 1298 and 360 as they head a short freight north on the Twin Cities line. Overnight rain has soaked fields and filled low-lying areas on this June 29, 1969, and much more is on the way. From our vantage point on the old Highway 20 overpass, the grain elevators of Iowa City, Iowa, appear on the distant horizon. The exhaust stack on the short hood and “torpedo tube” air tanks on the roof mark the 1298 as one of a group of 1953-built GP7’s equipped with steam generators for passenger service. Rebuilt, the 1298 will survive Rock Island’s 1980 collapse to become Chicago & North Western 4127.
