NS Train 218 negotiates a temporary alignment around track construction on the NCDOT Rail Division "Bowers to Lake Double Track Project". This project, part of the "Piedmont Improvement Program", constructs 4.2 miles of double track in addition to two roadway grade separations to increase rail capacity and improve safety. This location will be a new control point, called CP "Lake", consisting of a double No. 24 crossover on concrete ties allowing passenger trains to cross from one track to the other at 60 mph. The temporary alignment is needed to allow crews to build an asphalt layer and half of the crossovers in the location of the former single track.
