| With its crossing of the Sierra Nevada nearly complete Amtrak 6, the eastbound California Zephyr, slips down grade into Truckee, where it will make its final California stop before crossing into Nevada. Passengers who no doubt spent the last hour admiring the spectacular snow covered vistas of the Sierra have no idea that at one time much of Southern Pacific's Sierra Crossing through the snow belt was once covered by nearly 30 miles of continuous snow sheds. Thanks to advance snow fighting equipment and the hard working snow fighters themselves such obstacles are no longer needed to keep trains moving year round. |
