The coolest shortline there never was (this version, at least-- see comment below). I wish I had better photo skills (and the will to photograph trains somewhere outside of Bennett Yard and SY Tower) at the time, but this Kodachrome 25 slide scan shows you what a brilliant paint scheme the O&W units wore. The O&W was not a railroad; but rather a shipper-owned trainset to guarantee availability of locomotives, cars, (and a caboose!) for their product. The Middleton coal trains to SCE&G's Bushy Park (Williams Generating Station) were almost always delivered by the O&W trains during my teen years, making this train almost passé to a young railfan wowed by new and flashy things. I would actually get more excited about an SD50-powered coal train after seeing this one several times. With that mindset, I can easily recite the number of photos I have of the O&W trains running on the mainline outside of yard limits-- ZERO!
