| A pair of Joshua Trees in the Mojave National Preserve frame a heavy eastbound manifest entering double track as it nears the crest at Cima Summit after climbing over 2000 ft in the 18 miles from the base of the hill at Kelso. It was cold and windy at the summit and the big train operating 4x1 was working hard in the high desert on the 2.2% ruling grade, one of the West's oft overlooked heavy duty mountain railroad. Luck was with us as we drove up with 30 min of daylight left on this Sunday afternoon in the high desert. |
