Guilford, dealing with a worn-out, under-maintained fleet of diesels inherited from The D&H, the B&M, and the Maine Central, started looking to outside sources for used bargains to supplement the fleet. Here a relatively uncommon SD39 of Illinois Terminal/Norfolk Southern lineage has been immediately put to work with Guilford’s unique “patch job”, which included a large G on each long hood.
