Ja 1271 steams north through Mangaweka working a special to Taihape on a re-alignment opened in 1981 which includes spectacular viaducts, two being over 250 ft/ 78m high. 1271 was built at NZR Hillside in Dunedin and was among the very last steam locomotives to enter service. After restoration, it returned to mainline running in 1997.
