So, here I am sitting on a gray shale hill, all by myself before dawn, out in very rural eastern Utah. Cattle are bawling and a coyote runs across a field near me. I am waiting for Amtrak #6, the eastbound California Zephyr. I have been here for about half an hour and it’s cold up here. Temp. is somewhere in the 30’s and my jacket is down in my Jeep below me. If Amtrak is on time, and today they are, they leave Helper at 6:37AM. It should take about 20 minutes for them to get here, so 7AM should be train time. The sun is just partly above the horizon, but there are some thin clouds there too. Right at 7AM #6 swings around the curve and heads for my perch. I got the shot.
