On Crooked Hill, March 19, 1989:
A southbound Stilesboro (GA) unit train for Georgia Power comes out of the old northbound bore of Tunnel 8 on Crooked Hill behind four (4) U30C's. The old GEs will not remain in service much longer, but they were still doing a great job for CSX in this kind of service.
None other than Garland McKee was with us that day (along with David Oroszi and Jill, plus publisher Don McFall). I know Dave took a shot further to my left. I used a 300mm tele for my shot, and Garland also used a 300 and lined up near me.
By the way, we were together that weekend to make final shot selections for "L&N in the Appalachians," my first book project (co-authored with Garland and Dave). This visit to Crooked Hill was after we finished our work. The book was published in 1990 and sold out pretty quickly. You can still find it from some used book dealers.
