C&NW in Espee country……Former Chicago & Northwestern AC4400 8806, now Union Pacific's 6708, leads the charge on UP's hotshot 'Lathrop Z' as it hustles across the high desert south of Rosamond. Soon the C&NW green and yellow will streak passed a hold-out from Union Pacific's other mid-90s merger partner, the Southern Pacific. Designated by the SP, the line's builder, as their MP 397, placing this lonely desert outpost 397 miles away from the SP's former San Francisco, CA based headquarters. Three miles back at Oban the Mojave Subdivision hits its lowest point on its desert crossing between famed Cajon and Tehachapi Passes. Now the horses go back to work for the short climb up Ansel Hill which will take the train into Mojave at the base of the formidable Tehachapis.
