"Guzzler Vac Truck @ NYP" One of two hi-rail equipped Kenworth Guzzler Vac Trucks sits on Track 5 at Amtrak's Penn Station. The crews are waiting for the last Empire Service train across the platform, #245, to depart from before beginning the all night process of ridding the tracks of PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls. Elevated amounts of the cancer-causing toxins were original found in about an inch of sediment on two tracks, but as a safety measure, all tracks in Penn Station are being retested and cleaned. The source of the contamination is said to have originated from locomotive fluids that trains during the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad used to normally operate.
