In the chill of a Maine evening long ago, just when the loons started their spooky song on the lake, you heard the equally haunting sounds of a machine, far off yet coming. Closer it came, the sound more distinct and you strained to hear more. Then, with a flash of it's headlight, it hoved into view. Chuffing as only a little 2 foot gauge 0-4-4 steam locomotive can do, it steadily did it's work of taking people or freight from one place to another. In the golden dim light, No. 9 appeared much bigger than it did in the day. Then it rumbled past, going on it's journey and you were left with the wonderment of light, dark, steam, and life.
