Amtrak No. 5, the westbound California Zephyr, rushes past Pactolus Lake west of Pinecliffe, Colorado, on September 24, 2001. The largest building on the right is the former ice house that once was used to store and ship ice harvested from the lake during the winter to Denver. In later years the frozen lake was popular with ice skaters, complete with a large warming area and other facilities in the repurposed icehouse. An old man lived in a house on the property, and after he died, all the structures were demolished.
