An essential step in firing a steam locomotive is the blow-down. This opens the boiler to atmospheric pressure just above the mudring, allowing the steam pressure above the water to force all of the dissolved solids accumulated there out of the boiler to prevent scale buildup. For photography's concerns, the blow-down can create some very dramatic scenes as the raw power of Steam is unleashed. Here we see K-37 #491 being blown down as she takes a spin on the turntable, being readied for the day's runs. |
