I've been actively documenting the in's & out's of Amtrak's Auto Train since 1986, having lived near both terminuses of Lorton and Sanford, and I've seen so many unusual things....but never this. The yard job going way up the mainline, almost a full train length, to retrieve the racks. They typically pull into the branch just enough to let the switcher pick them up...or maybe just hang out a tad on the mainline right under the overpass....but this? Wow. Not only that, they had P42 #88 along for the move, giving the appearance of a bonafide inbound train from Lorton. May not be the first time its ever happened, but it is the one and only time I've ever heard of it happening....much less be there to see it!
