Remarks & Notes |
The Mount Washington Cog Railway is one of the most unique railroads in the world. The 3 mile stretch of track to the Summit of the 6288' Mount Washington is the second steepest railroad in the world with grades from 25 to 37 percent. The railroad was once all steam however due to operational cost and environmental reasons there are only two working steam locomotives left in the fleet. The Cog now uses a fleet of six modern bio diesels powered by John Deere motors. In this photo the M-2 "Algonquin" departs Marshfield Base Station with the first section of the 1:30 train. |
