Lake Point, Utah on UP’s Lyndyll Sub. is just a few miles west of Salt Lake City. This is a wonderful photo spot for both west and eastbound trains. There is a very convenient rock outcropping here where you can wait for trains to appear. But, you must be on your toes because of the blind curve. The tracks east toward Salt Lake are not visible, so you can’t see an approaching train. You can’t hear one coming either, as lack of road crossings precludes any horn sound and the mountain and adjacent I80 traffic noise prevent any sound of the approaching train reaching you. So, you get your camera set up in advance, find a rock to sit on, and you wait, and wait. Once a westbound rounds the curve shown here you have maybe five seconds to start shooting. If you are looking the wrong way, you may miss the shot. Yesterday, I was lucky here and caught the KG1CI-11 in great light at Lake Point. That is the Great Salt Lake just showing up at far left center. The leader, UP 2648, is one of those new Tier 4 models, I think it's the first one I have seen.
