Remarks & Notes
Three year old FP45s nos. 3 and 1 pair up in their second color scheme and new assignment: freight service. Purchased for Hiawatha passenger service the units were delivered in UP yellow, but were pulled for freight duty with the coming of Amtrak in May 1971. Amtrak did acquire some MILW E9 locomotives. Milwaukee had only five of the FPs, and as far as I can tell, only no. 3 received the maroon lettering on the side. Here the pair head for the roundhouse after arriving with a freight train at Pigs Eye Yard, St. Paul, MN.

Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
