Remarks & Notes |
A westbound BNSF train traveling over the MRL exits Mullan Tunnel in a plume of smoke. The tunnel cuts under the Continental Divide at 5,548 feet above sea level and stretching 3,896 feet long. The tunnel is one of the narrowest tunnels in the country at only 13 feet wide, so smoke tends to fill up quickly as train muscle their way upgrade thru it. The tunnel was built back in 1881 and went under some construction and upgrades back in 2009 to help the clearance and stability by making the tunnel 5 feet taller and 3 feet wider. |
