The long trip from Union Pacific's West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, is under way as the special ferrying UP Big Boy 4014 passes through Slover (San Bernardino) about 3 miles into its journey on April 28, 2014. UP SD70M 4014 is leading 4-8-8-4 4014 (which is dead, of course) with an assist from SD70M 4884 (the number is synonymous with the steam engine's wheel arrangement), pulling 3 passenger cars, 2 box cars and 7 flat cars (the axles are needed to improve the braking capabilities). In ten days, on May 8, this train will arrive in Cheyenne, where Big Boy 4014 will enter the steam shop to be rebuilt to operating condition. But today's destination is Yermo, in California's Mojave Desert.
