Golden rays of sunshine have just started shining through the trees as the sound of a train approaching from the east echoes through the damp, cold woods near the north shore of Lake Pend Oreille. Within a few minutes, a westbound unit grain train roars past, stirring up a whirlwind of freshly fallen leaves in its wake. A single DPU tags along on the back end of this behemoth, and within another minute, the forest will return to its state of tranquility. Seasons can change quickly in the Idaho Panhandle; while the autumn colors are just reaching their peak down on the valley floor, winter is already arriving in the mountains above.
