“Best Bib and Tucker” Photographed at Riverside on June 29, 1986, the newly repainted CSX/B&O 6344 is the former Chessie System/B&O GP40-2 4446. Outshopped from Huntington in early May 1986, this was the first locomotive painted at a Chessie shop in the new CSX scheme. Note that it initially retained the B&O reporting mark.
This was actually a welcome sight to most, as at least the locals were not exactly big fans of the Chessie livery back then. I have to admit, I liked the new look--well, maybe without the unnecessary “TRANSPORTATION” on the long hood. They must’ve heard my complaint. By the end of the year, it had been decided to eliminate “TRANSPORTATION” and the double bars from the long hood. Witness the second unit painted at Huntington, 6638, in action on 01/06/1987 in photo 610694. Unfortunately, subsequent iterations would get worse before they got better.
