Remarks & Notes
A westbound Santa Fe train holds at Cliff to meet an eastbound Southern Pacific train. While the Santa Fe trains climbed the grade without much visual fanfare, the SP locos were often smoke-belching monsters, as evidenced by the huge eruption of smoke that is seen emanating from the portal of Tunnel 5. It’s no wonder that so much of the SP power we encountered was so filthy.
