The Royal Gorge Route!
The eastbound return trip to Canon City passes under the Royal Gorge Bridge and is dwarfed by the canon. The bridge was built in 1929 and serves no purpose other than that of a tourist attraction. At 955 ft high, it was the highest bridge in the world until 2001 and remains the highest in the US. The main span of the bridge between the towers is 880 feet, the total length is 1,260 feet, and the towers are 150 feet high. The steel base structure is covered with 1292 wooden planks. The bridge took 6 months to build in 1929 at a cost of $350,000. [facts courtesy of Wikipedia]
