San Luis Central GE 70-ton No. 71 sits in the railroad’s shop at Sugar Junction just east of Monte Vista, Colorado, on September 1, 2013. This locomotive was purchased in 1955 and replaced the short lines only steam locomotive, a 1913 Baldwin 2-8-0 named “Little Nell” that first operated on the railroad in January 1914. Both locomotives were purchased new, well serving the 100-year-old railroad.
