Deep within the trees of the Sierra foothills, faded armour yellow and warn out UP wings catch the last rays of afternoon sunlight as an east bound manifest, bound for Roper, UT, blasts out of a tunnel on UP's Donner Pass route. The train is approaching one of many curved cuts throughout the foothills that help block out the noise of rail traffic from houses scattered around the roadbed.
