A cold November Rain has been falling all morning on Raitt Mountain in Buchanan County, Virginia. This mountain grade is one of the steepest on the Norfolk Southern at 1.7%, and the wet rail has not made for an easy climb for the 3 big motors on the head-end and three pushing hard on the rear..... Some people also call this Home Creek Grade, named for the creek that the rails follow. This photo is taken at Home Creek, the summit of the mountain, 150 yards east of Raitt Mountain Tunnel.... The train is just making the top in full Run-8 as the clouds of the rainy morning begin to break up a bit.......
