| Cumberland Furnace was a major producer of iron from the 1790's until its last gasp in 1942. The iron mines and furnaces here supplied much of the iron used by the US in the war of 1812.
In 1891 L&N Railroad built the Mineral Branch line with a 6 mile spur to the town of Cumberland Furnace. A passenger/freight depot soon followed. The original depot burned in 1919 and this one was built in 1920. It is still in its original location and in remarkably good shape.
Passenger service was discontinued in 1928, freight in 1931. The tracks were removed in 1936 and the old railbed became Dry Hollow Road, which it still is today. |
