Remarks & Notes
On a hazy summer morning two years before Amtrak, Penn Central train 81 between New York and Albany comes off the Harlem River lift bridge and enters the Bronx behind an ancient-looking P2b electric of New York Central and Cleveland Union Terminal heritage. This photo was taken from the platform of the now-gone 138th Street commuter station, a great train-watching spot at the time.

The three biggest passenger carriers - Pennsylvania, New York Central, and New Haven - merged to create the ill-fated Penn Central, whose passenger losses and poor service led to the formation of Amtrak and state-owned commuter lines.
