PRR #7688 is one of a total of three 2-8-0 PRR survivors on display at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. This Consolidation was built in 1915 and represents one of Pennsy's Lima purchases. The other 2-8-0's, are No. 1187, built by the Railroad's own shops and the third Consolidation, #2846, is a Baldwin offering. A recent rearranging of locomotives offered an opportunity to finally capture the image, free of the fence that had long obscured its view by the front entrance. Like most of the Museum's collection, No. 7688 had received an earlier, albeit, minor cosmetic restoration and looked quite a bit nicer in the past. It even had a place inside the Museum at one point. Work continues, one by one, to restore the collection with an ultimate goal to bring all the locomotives indoors under a roof - weather it be the current Museum building or a future roundhouse.
