Remarks & Notes
A charming tourist train

The Kandertalbahn – or Kander Valley Railway – is a tourist operation running from Haltingen near Basel to Kandern. It has a truly charming rolling stock. The old timer passenger cars are wonderfully restored and represent local passenger operations of the early XXth century. The steam engine is a light Austrian 2-4-2 tank. It initially belonged to the Austrian class BBÖ 378 that later became the ÖBB class 93.

Note that the Austrian Federal Railways are called ÖBB (German: Österreichische Bundesbahnen) since 1947, but they were formerly called the Bundesbahn Österreich or BBÖ when formed in 1923 as a successor to the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB). The name BBÖ had been initially chosen because ÖBB was already taken by the Swiss Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn (which by the way still exists but is now named OeBB!).

The 4 Austrian steam locomotive makers built 167 units between 1927 and 1931. It is a light engine (max 11 tonnes per axle) and has a power of 800 hp. It was designed for shunting and short line services. The 378.78 was built in Wien in 1927 and preserved in 1980 by Eurovapor. It worked on the Wutachtalbahn carrying the ÖBB number 93.1378. It joined the Kandertalbahn in 1999 sporting its original number 378.78.

The time is gone, the song is over, snapshots and memories remains... Some things we remember, some we see now - and will not forget...
