As the sun begins to set, employees of North Shore Track Services put the finishing touches on new rail near Winthrop, Minnesota as they hammer rail anchors into place. This is part of a $4 million project to replace 6 miles of 100+ year old 85# jointed rail with brand new 115# continuously welded rail. The track is owned by the Minnesota Valley Regional Rail Authority but operated as the Minnesota Prairie Line by the Twin Cities & Western Railroad. When completed, the project will improve reliability and safety, as well as increase speeds from 10 mph to 25 mph. (Photo taken on railroad property with permission.)
