Remarks & Notes
50 Years ago - SNCF 141 R 498 is seen near Le Haut Banc on the climb to Caffiers from the south the the 12.20 Paris Nord to Calais-Maritime ' La Freche d'Or' (Golden Arrow) train. The use of a 2-8-2 was due to the number of Pacifics available at Calais depot declining due to withdrawals and they would finish the following January. 141 R 498 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chester, Pennsylania and entered service in February 1946. Withdrawal was in 1973.

The front of the train is dark. This is just what makes the picture so good.
