Remarks & Notes
The camera is looking due north just east of the Milwaukee Road's Milwaukee diesel house. In January 1969 the Milwaukee Road received from EMD five FP45's numbered 1-5 for passenger train service between Chicago and the Twin Cities and Chicago and Omaha. I remember working on the night diesel house hostling when they came in....three the first night and two the second. These units would work not even two years in armour yellow and gray and about a few months before the NRPC(Amtrak) would start the 1-5 would be pulled from passenger service boilers removed and placed in freight pool service on the entire Milwaukee Road system making a number of trips to the west coast on LINES WEST even though they had NO dynamic brakes. These units were probably the worst riding locomotives on the entire Milwaukee except for the U23B's..which in my estimation should have been permanent B-units!! There has been some questions about their Vapor-Clarkson steam generators....all I remember they would heat a ten car train alone....they were the largest boilers we had on the Milwaukee Road. I forgot to say that the Vapor-Clarkson steam generators when not able to ignite on auto or the electric ignition failed completely.....you could hand bomb em by opening up the upper site glass filling them with fuel and dropping a lit fuse down through the open top.....then duck or run like hell before the explosion took place......nine times out of ten this usually fired off the boiler but it wasn't to good for the interior paint job of the boiler room.

Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
