A westbound Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad photo freight led by K-37 No. 497 waits on the main line as K-27 No. 463, used as a mid-train helper to the summit of Cumbres Pass, trundles by light engine headed back to Chama ahead of the freight. It’s September 17, 1996, and snow is coming down hard at the lofty elevation of 10,022 feet at the summit, but winter can arrive early in Colorado’s high country.
