CNW SD38-2s 6655 and 6659 team up on the hump at Proviso Yard, C&NW's only hump yard at Bellwood, IL on Chicago's west side. This photo was taken from the main tower. The railroad ordered 10 SD38-2s in the mid 1970s for hump, switching and transfer service in the Chicago area. Note the hump was a double track hump, and often two sets of power would be working blocks of cars simultaneously. The 69 track bowl had destination assignments for each track that could change each 8 hour shift. Note also the towers that helped control retarders. At one time this was the largest yard of its type in the U. S.
