In some ways this image summarizes Mothers Day with the 4014: beautiful weather, the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, and crowds of regular folks enjoying the spectacle of a "Big Boy" on a train. It was a great public occasion for the railroad, and perhaps a somewhat frustrating day for the railfan photogs. I had resisted going because of the expected crowds, but in the end the lure of seeing a 4-8-8-4 on its home rails was just too tempting. I had scouted this location the day before, and decided it was just too nice to ignore. I reluctantly embraced the notion that I was there to photograph an event, not just a locomotive. So I joined several hundred other photographers and folks just looking to enjoy this wonderful scene, freeway gridlock, parked cars, and all.
