| 4 cylinder compound cogwheel steamlocomotive HG 4/4 # 704 of the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke (DFB) shunting at Furka DFB station, at the east portal of the Furka summit tunnel. The locomotive will be turned on the turntable for the 11.0 % grade run down the mountain to Realp. This locomotive, built for Vietnam, is not allowed to go down the mountain chimney first, because of the danger that the water in the boiler would no longer cover the firebox ceiling. The HG 3/4 locomotives of the DFB are built to manage this. On 2160 meter a.s.l. there is still some snow in mid july. |
