A Steam Excursion Veteran Watches From the Side. As UP 4014's Rail Giants Train Museum excursion basks in the morning light at the original ATSF Barstow station, the back half of its train sits nearby the Western America Railroad Museum's equipment. One of these pieces, the ATSF 95, is no stranger to mainline steam excursions here at Barstow. After being delivered to the Santa Fe in 1967, No. 95 (originally number No. 105) would lead some of Santa Fe's finest passenger trains before moving to freight. Twenty-four yeas later, however, the locomotive found itself as part of the motive power of a passenger train once again - this time behind a steam locomotive. On December 27, 1991, ATSF 95 embarked on a four-day round trip behind the newly restored Santa Fe 3751 as the 4-8-4 Northern triumphantly led the California Limited. The steam special traveled to Bakersfield via Cajon Pass, spending the night in Barstow before traversing Tehachapi Pass. Today, some 28 years later, ATSF 95 now watches from the sidelines here as another mainline steam excursion calls on Barstow.
