This FCCA railroader ie sanding the main track with salvaged sand from the nearby track. We are in the Chosica yard but the grade is already there, as the line climbs the Andes within an incredibly short distance. From Chosica, km54 and 860m asl (2822ft) to the summit inside the Galera tunnel at 4782m (15689ft), the distance is only 118km / 73 miles.
Note the writing on the rail in the foreground. It reads Rodange 1929 VI P.C. 80lb. It was manufactured in Rodange, Luxembourg, in June 1929. Still in use, it might be replaced soon, as the FCCA keeps investing in new track.
