Metra commuter train 2230 (Elgin to Chicago) departs the Bensenville, Illinois, station on a snowy November 11, 2019. This train, led by Nippon Sharyo cab car 8548, has F59PHI 73 shoving on the rear. The EMD F59PHI is a new model for Metra, having purchased them second hand from other carriers. METX 73 is the former Amtrak 450 (built 4/98) which, on this cold, snowy Veterans Day (in which the temperature never rose above 24º F [-4º C]), which, if it were sentient, might have been missing the balmy southern California runs along the Pacific Ocean on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliners.
