Remarks & Notes
Approaching Cumbres Pass. With her pops lifting and her Fireman's injector going full-blast, DRGW 453 hauls a mixed freight the last mile up the eastern approach to the 10,000 ft. Cumbres Pass. The locomotive seen here is actually DRGW 463, one of two extant K-27s, and the only one still in Colorado. She was re-lettered specifically for this trip, which was intended to re-create an RGS freight. Note the authentic RGS caboose on this train, visible just above the first gondola car.

The stretch of track shown here is the southern end of the Cumbres Loop, which is more commonly known as "Tanglefoot Curve" today. The curve is an excellent spot to photograph trains, particularly in the mid-afternoon. If you're not riding a charter, it will require about a 10 minute hike from Cumbres Pass at a brisk walking pace to get to this spot. Also bear in mind a couple of things.....you're at 10,000 ft., so the hike will be a little more strenuous than normal. Another thing to bear in mind....are bears. I've never seen one here....but I have seen tracks.

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
