Remarks & Notes
We're leaving Chicago on train #3 the Afternoon Hiawatha.....its must be a Friday cause I'm skipping school and I always skipped school on Fridays. I'd walk to school on Friday mornings walk in one door and walk out the other at John Marshall Junior/Senior High School in Milwaukee I'd board a Milwaukee Transport Co.bus and head downtown to the Milwaukee Road depot where I would board train #24 The Traveler for Chicago 0745 departure. We'd arrive Chicago around 0900......I usually rode the locomotive cab with Charlie Gust/Cliff Eberhardt/Mike Patulski or most any of the C&M Division Engineers....I new most of them.....if not I had my Dad's Veterans pass that he gave me when I was ten years old cause he said he'd never use it. While in Chicago Union Station I'd hangout at the large information board they had and listen to the two gals give out train info to a lot of people. Some days I'd leave on the Morning Hiawatha to go back to Milwaukee and some days I'd leave on the Afternoon Hiawatha as the photo above shows #3 as #5 usually had a lot of head end mail and express cars. My skipping school came to a screeching halt one day as I was on one of the northbound Hi's for Milwaukee and we derailed the dome the diner and the ob car near Truesdell......I was in the dome and I'll never forget what it feels like to derail at 90mph......needless to say the Milwaukee Road spiked the train right there and loaded all of us passengers on the southbound Morning Hiawatha #6 back to Chicago. I finally got out of Chicago on #23 at 420PM and back in Milwaukee at 545PM.....the Station Master was a real good guy and who's name I'm drawing a blank on came out when he saw me and said that my Ma had been calling and she WAS REALLY PISSED! Needless to say I lost my pass privilege for awhile. Iused to get away with it cause I always signed my Dads name on the excuse on Monday mornings....Tom.
