Wallowing in the weeds at Walton Quiet in the tiny hamlet of Walton, Illinois, is disturbed by the infrequent passage of an eastbound Burlington Northern local on June 10, 1984. Trackage on this former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy branch from Sterling to Earlville is deteriorating at this point in history, as the caboose of the local passes the Dunphy’s Feed Store with the tracks of the branch all but invisible in the lush grass and weeds. Soon, with traffic dwindling, trains would not be running on this 46.8-mile long line, and it would be torn up in 1985.
