As Amtrak train 4, the eastbound Southwest Chief, departs Los Angeles Union Station, Metrolink train 328 (behind SCAX MP36PH-3C 888, also departs L.A.’s Union Station. Both trains are running side-by-side, but the Metrolink train has crossed the Los Angeles River in order to take a more direct route to San Bernardino, while Amtrak 4 is running down the River’s west bank and will take a less direct route to San Bernardino, its third stop as it heads east to Chicago. Amtrak’s locomotive that honors Veterans, P42DC 42, is teamed with P42DC 41 to haul their abbreviated 5-car train. (Los Angeles, California – May 13, 2020)
