Borrowed Time. On a crystal clear morning in Northeast New Mexico, Amtrak's Southwest Chief encounters the first pair of semaphore signals on its westbound journey to Los Angeles. The Chief will now race through over 100 miles of "semaphore country" between here and Los Cerrillos, NM. The semaphore signals along this route are the last active mainline semaphores in America. Unfortunately, their time is limited. Right now, BNSF signal crews are actively working to replace these signals. Soon, Santa Fe's semaphores will be resigned to the history books.
