Remarks & Notes
La Veta Pass meaning Mineral Vein Pass lies at 9242 feet at the the top of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. This eastbound train is climbing the 2.5% grade approaching the famous "loop" at Fir. The San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad is the current operator of D&RGWs original route over the Rockies. SLRG is currently in bankruptcy proceedings creating many problems for the men trying to still move freight over the Pass. Currently the railroad is down to just two locomotives with only one SD70 reliable enough to lift freight over the grades. With the SD70m only able to lift about 10-12 loads at a time over La Veta tripling and even quadrupling cars out of Sierra is not un-common. A recent addition to operations over the route is hi-railer that checks for broken rails before and after nearly every train movement.

A compilation of DRGW's La Veta Pass route to the San Luis Valley now operated by the SLRG. With Rio Grande Scenic passenger operations coming to a close in 2019, the Alamosa sub is once again freight-only, as reflected here.
