Remarks & Notes
Sometimes when you think you're hot you're not.......I'm sitting in the Engineer's seat of the Ford Fast on the westward mainline of the Milwaukee Road's LaCrosse Division. The Watertown Operator has radioed us to stop our train at the west end of Voltz so the XL Special 261 can pass us through the siding. Now... nobody likes to get passed in the freight pool as if it's a legal pass the crew that goes ahead stays ahead....meaning you get back home even later....sometimes this could mean a 12 hour difference in catching an eastbound train back home.Needless to say I got on the radio to the Don Coleman the Watertown OPR. to voice my opinion but to no avail.....261 WAS the hottest thing on the RR so they would pass us. I gave the DS credit for letting us out of Milwaukee and hoping we could make Portage for 261 but we were just to long for 2 units....3 would have made the difference....probably would have stayed ahead all the way to St.Paul with three units. Anyway as we watch 261's markers fade into the distance all we've got to worry about know is Amtrak's Empire Builder will be closing in behind us soon and will the DS let us go ahead of him or not??

The front of the train is dark. This is just what makes the picture so good.

All of Tom Farence's pictures with stories. These are too incredible not to put in an album. Will include other's photos if they have a write up to go with.
