"Allegra" ABe 8/12 # 3513 is pulling the regional train 4637 from St.Moritz to Tirano down the 7.0 % grade of the Bernina line below Brusio, passing 9 stone domes of "Crotti", typical for this region. Few were the crotti used as a dwelling or as a stable and barn. Most of them were used for the preservation of milk and perishable food. Sometimes a single building, spacious and cosy, used by an entire nucleus of houses. The damp place or the presence of water springs kept the temperature constant and guaranteed the preservation of the milk contained in the copper basins. Vegetables, cheese, butter and the few fruits that were once collected were stored for a long time in the crotti on special shelves or in cupboards.
